Osteria San Michele

Our approach to cooking is shaped by Alice’s vision, as a certified Smart Climate Chef, and is rooted in seasonality, sustainability, and deep respect for ingredients.

The dialogue with the woods and the surrounding land takes shape in an approach inspired by wild cooking: wild herbs, mushrooms, roots, and local produce become part of an essential menu, built around natural rhythms and the value of what grows around the villa.

Restaurant opening hours:

  • open daily from 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday: 12.30 pm – 2.30 pm | 7.30 pm – 10.30 pm

To explore Chianti in a smooth and scenic way, we recommend a circular itinerary inspired by the Strada del Vino e dell’Olio Chianti Classico (linked to the Chiantigiana / SR222), combining villages, architecture, and landscape.

One-day itinerary

1) Radda in Chianti
A compact medieval village with well-preserved walls and historic layout, set in a highly panoramic position. It is also a symbolic place for Chianti Classico: this is where, in 1924, the idea of the Consorzio linked to the Black Rooster was born.

2) Castellina in Chianti
A perfect stop if you want a mix of history and views: Via delle Volte is a covered walkway built into the town walls, with openings over the valley; you can also include the Chianti Archaeological Museum (inside the Rocca) if you would like a short but worthwhile cultural stop.

3) Panzano in Chianti
Here the standout view is the Conca d’Oro: vineyards and rolling hills unfolding below the village. It is an ideal stop for lunch, for a soft trek, or for a walk through the historic centre and its panoramic viewpoints.

4) Greve in Chianti
An easy and lively final stop: Piazza Matteotti is the heart of the town, with its triangular shape, arcades, and local shops. It is also a great place to enjoy a more food-focused break, with cured meats and local specialities, before heading back.

Around Villa San Michele there are official CAI Firenze itineraries (Sentieri di Greve), perfect for alternating panoramic walks through vineyards, white roads, and wooded sections. Below are the most suitable routes for half-day or full-day outings.

Lamole Ring through Monte San Michele Park

One of the most scenic recommended routes is the Lamole Ring.

Start / finish: Lamole (Greve in Chianti)
CAI data: 16.8 km · 5h30 · difficulty E/T · elevation gain 310 m

A complete and scenic loop connecting Castello di Lamole, the Church of San Michele in the park and, if you wish, with a short detour you can reach the summit of Monte San Michele (893 m).

Casa al Monte Ring, towards the springs of the Greve

Start / finish: Panzano in Chianti
CAI data: 11.3 km · 3h15 · difficulty E/T · elevation gain 230 m

A panoramic and flowing route through clearings, vineyards, and woodland; along the itinerary, CAI also points out the possibility of a detour to the Hermitage of San Pietro alle Stinche.

Montefioralle and Montegonzi Ring (Trail 425)

Start / finish: Greve in Chianti
CAI data: 8.2 km · 3h · difficulty T/E · elevation gain 330 m

Perfect for a half-day walk: it includes the village of Montefioralle (listed among “I borghi più belli d’Italia”) and passes through Montegonzi, with stretches among olive groves, vineyards, and white roads.

Pesa Ring from Panzano, along the ridges of the Borro di San Martino (Trail 434)

Start / finish: Panzano in Chianti (near the chapel of Santa Maria alle Grazie, as indicated in the CAI description)
CAI data: 8.9 km · 3h · difficulty E/T · elevation gain 130 m

The gentlest loop in terms of elevation gain: it alternates white roads through vineyards, wooded sections, and valley crossings (to be approached carefully after periods of rain).

Florence is the easiest city to reach from Villa San Michele, whether for a day trip or for those who want to combine a stay in the countryside with a few hours among museums, artisan shops, and the historic centre.

  • By car, the journey usually takes around 50–60 minutes, following the SR222 Chiantigiana, one of the most beautiful roads in the area, running through villages, vineyards, and hills before reaching the city.
  • For those who prefer public transport, Autolinee Toscane connections from Greve in Chianti to Florence are available, especially line 365.
  • Alternatively, a practical option is to drive to Figline Valdarno and continue from there by regional train to Firenze Santa Maria Novella, with frequent services throughout the day.

Siena is a perfect destination for a day trip: smaller and more intimate than Florence, but just as rich in history, medieval views, and places to explore at a slower pace.

  • By car, Villa San Michele is about 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes away, crossing Chianti along a very scenic route.
  • By public transport, the connection is less direct than to Florence and may require one or more changes, depending on the time of day. One option is to use extra-urban bus lines towards the Castellina / Radda / Siena area.
  • Alternatively, you can reach a more convenient railway station, such as Figline Valdarno, and continue by train towards Siena, bearing in mind that the rail journey normally includes at least one change. For this reason, especially for a day trip, travelling by car remains the most practical option.

In Chianti, events follow a very natural rhythm: spring brings villages and traditions, summer brings evenings outdoors, and September is all about wine and the harvest.

Below you will find our selection:

  • Mostra del Chianti (Montespertoli, late May–early June)
One of the area’s historic wine events, with an evening programme and events throughout the town.
  • Sagra delle Frittelle (Montefioralle – Greve in Chianti, March)
A village weekend in one of the most scenic hamlets above Greve: rice fritters, authentic atmosphere, and views over the hills.
  • Expo Chianti Classico (Greve in Chianti, September)
The landmark event in Greve: producers in the square, tastings, and village life in the heart of Chianti Classico.
  • Vino al Vino (Panzano in Chianti, September)
Tastings in the main square with the winemakers of Panzano: one of the area’s most recognisable events.
  • Festa dell’Uva (Impruneta, late September)
A historic local tradition with parades, tastings, and neighbourhood districts: the event takes place on the last Sunday of September.
  • L’Eroica (Gaiole in Chianti, October)
A major event linked to “heroic” cycling, with a festival and activities throughout the village.

If you would like to take a piece of Chianti home with you, these are the most convenient and reliable markets near Villa San Michele:

  • Weekly market in Greve in Chianti (every Saturday morning, Piazza Matteotti)
Among craft stalls and local products, it is a simple and enjoyable stop for a walk through town and to buy regional specialities.
  • Il Pagliaio – organic and craft market (Greve in Chianti, Piazza Matteotti – every 4th Sunday of the month)
Local producers, organic goods, and handmade crafts: often with themed editions. Dates and details should be checked each time.
  • Aprilante (Panzano in Chianti – monthly event)
A small market with artisans, creatives, and “attic clearance” stalls through the village streets: perfect if you want something different from the classic market.
